New start of the Industry business unit at Willich

In mid-May the Industry business unit of thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe with its activities moved from Leverkusen to the modern Willich site. This will increase the number of employees in Willich by around 70 to 120. In addition to a larger production team, the administrative department is now also located in Willich. The focus of the location is on specializing in segments such as manufacturers of profiles, furniture or even equipment and apparatus engineering. Here the steel service center can now offer its customers an expanded product and service portfolio in addition to higher capacities in order to meet the continuing high demand in the industrial customer sector.

The state-of-the-art facility in Willich has five slitting lines and one cut-to-length line. Slit strip is now available in thicknesses from 0.4 to 7.0 mm and widths from 7.0 to 1,600 mm, with sheet lengths of up to 6,000 mm possible. Compared with the previous site in Leverkusen, customers now have 20 percent more production capacity at their disposal.

Thanks to the additional narrow strip center including jumbo coiling, which is also available on site, customer requests for strips in special lengths of up to 25 kilometers can be met. Focus on resource-friendly industries: thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe supplies tailored supply chain solutions to the solar industry

Sustainability is a core component of thyssenkrupp’s corporate strategy. The diversified industrial group aims to offer innovative products, technologies and services worldwide that contribute to the sustainable success of its customers as well as climate protection. The solar industry, for example, is one of many other sectors that has special requirements when it comes to the organization of the value chain. thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe has identified these requirements and provides tailored supply chain services to manufacturers of industrial solar power systems used for sustainable electricity generation.

The processing specialists from thyssenkrupp Materials Services offer their customers material specifications specially configured for locations with particularly challenging weather conditions such as coastal regions. It is also very important to coordinate supplies with the relevant subcontractors, and to manage and monitor logistics.

Cooperation with the solar industry expanded

The best example of the cooperation with the solar industry is the company’s Spanish site El Puig. Since mid-2019 numerous project orders have been booked and supply volumes continuously expanded. The projects are for large-scale systems with photovoltaic elements around the world, with a particular focus on solutions for producing solar trackers which follow the position of the sun, making a significant contribution to sustainable energy generation and supporting climate protection. This year the steel and aluminum service center group is aiming to increase its sales in this sector by 30%.

thyssenkrupp’s climate strategy

Under its climate strategy, the thyssenkrupp Group aims to be climate-neutral by 2050, not only in its own processes and the energy it purchases but also based on its products’ emissions. As early as 2030 the Group plans to cut emissions from production and outsourced energy by around 30%. Emissions from the use of thyssenkrupp products are to fall by 16% by 2030.

Marcus Wöhl, CEO of thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe, says: “Our goal is to intensify collaboration with manufacturers of sustainable products and support sectors such as the solar industry with custom materials and tailored services.”

thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe offers the solar industry a range of services for optimizing their value chain: In addition to advice on material selection for profiles, the company organizes just-in-time deliveries and logistics to ensure problem-free transportation to fabricators and end customers. Here the company group benefits not least from its many years of experience in the profile industry and the development of Europe-wide logistics solutions.

As a leading steel and aluminum service center, thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe serves customers from the automotive, electrical, construction and furniture industries from thirteen locations in six countries. Backed by many years of expertise in procurement, consulting and prefabrication, the processing specialist supplies tailored services and digital solutions for flat steel and nonferrous metals to a wide range of customers throughout Europe.

thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe supplies Volkswagen in Portugal on a just-in-time basis

One of Europe’s most popular compact SUVs rolls off the production line in the Portuguese city of Setubal: the VW T-Roc. For the production of this top-selling model, Volkswagen puts its faith in the supply chain experts from thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe’s unit Palmetal in Palmela, just a few kilometers away. Employees work in 19 shifts seven days a week to ensure that the right material for the T-Roc is delivered to the Volkswagen Autoeuropa plant in the right quality at the right time. thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe, a subsidiary of thyssenkrupp Materials Services, offers its longstanding client custom services along the entire value chain and develops them further when required to meet the growing requirements of its customer with new, tailored solutions.

“For example, based on an in-house development we have automated almost all our assembly and delivery processes to match Volkswagen’s requirements. We can identify when material is needed at an early stage and trigger new delivery orders. Volkswagen can focus fully on its core activities while we provide tailored logistics and just-in-time deliveries,” says António Novais, Managing Director of Palmetal. The basis for this approach is a clear and precise process chain which helps reduce waiting times to a minimum and enhance the efficiency of deliveries for customers. Quality of delivery is therefore consistently of the highest standard in meeting the required volumes.

Expansion of supply chain expertise

The Portuguese site was established in 1993 to supply Volkswagen Autoeuropa and has grown constantly since then. It now has five buildings covering almost 30,000 square meters. Solving complex challenges for customers and developing tailored supply chain services are core competencies of thyssenkrupp Materials Services. Customer-specific challenges

thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe was required to meet special, customer-specific challenges. The aim was to achieve this by optimizing and expanding the supplier structure for products with particular specifications and quality requirements such as stainless steel and Galfan. In addition, it was essential to support the growth strategy of the NORMA Group and to coordinate all processes via a central contact.

Optimization of the logistics strategy with two consignment warehouses close to the customer also ensures flexible access to a variety of products. Cooperation across the Europe-wide network of the service center group continues to be coordinated from its site in Mannheim, ensuring that NORMA Group retains its familiar contacts.

“The award is great recognition for us,” says Marcus Wöhl, CEO of thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe. “It shows that our Europe-wide service center network meets the highest standards of material supply and tailored supply chain services, creating clear benefits for customers.” Access to global supply markets and continuous expansion of the service portfolio make a key contribution toward the development of the company’s “Materials as a Service” strategy.

thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe further expands service business

Larger spectrum for jumbo coiling stainless steel products

thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe has further expanded its service business and invested in its narrow strip center in Leverkusen. A new TIG welder for stainless steel has been purchased which can weld together narrow strip of up to 2 millimeters thickness. The state-of-the-art machine made by IDEAL-Werk further expands the processing capabilities of the service center group of the Materials Services business area in response to increased customer requirements.

The machine was designed specifically for the company’s requirements and carries out welding operations fully automatically. It can handle strip thicknesses of 0.5 – 2 millimeters and widths of 12 – 65 millimeters. A special feature is that the TIG welder executes the weld at an oblique angle, not the usual 90 degrees, which almost completely rules out breakages depending on type of further processing. Crater-free surfaces are obtained using template plates. As a portable unit the machine can be used at all the jumbo coilers in the narrow strip center. Jumbo coils not only offer efficiency advantages, they also contribute to reducing customers’ setup times.

As a leading steel and aluminum service center, thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe serves fabricators from the automotive, electrical, construction and furniture industries from 13 sites in six countries. With their many years of expertise in procurement, consulting and prefabrication, the processing specialists provide tailored flat steel and nonferrous metal services for a wide range of customers throughout Europe.

thyssenkrupp Materials Services will be exhibiting at the EuroBLECH show in Hanover from October 23-26, 2018. We look forward to seeing you in hall 17, booth E33.

Manufacturer IDEAL-Werk will be displaying the TIG welder prior to commissioning at the EuroBLECH show, hall 13, booth C17.
